Structural Steel Repair
Corrosion of embedded structural steel can cause severe movement and displacement of adjacent masonry, leading to cracking, shifting, and compromised structural performance. Structural steel repair restores or replaces corroded steel elements and reinforces the wall system so it performs reliably and safely.
Let’s protect your structure before small issues become big ones.
What is Structural Steel Repair?
Structural steel repair often begins with identifying the extent of corrosion and its impact on adjacent masonry. Corroded steel elements are carefully exposed by removing surrounding masonry, then either rehabilitated or replaced. The surrounding wall is temporarily supported, new steel is installed to proper specifications, and masonry is rebuilt around it using compatible materials. Protective flashings and moisture control measures are added to prevent future corrosion and maintain long-term durability.
Common Repair Triggers:
- Rust stains appearing on brick or stone surfaces
- Cracks in the wall that seem to grow or shift over time
- Bulging or bowing masonry that looks pushed outward
- Water leaks or damp spots near steel lintels or supports
- Brick or stone moving out of place around windows or openings
- Areas where the wall feels unstable or visibly separating
- Older buildings that have not had steel components inspected recently
Why MRI?
Corrosion of structural steel is the single largest cause of the need for masonry repairs and is a service in which we excel. Our knowledge of structural steel repair is second to none. Depending on the severity of the corrosion, the steel may need to be replaced. We can replace steel by shoring the surrounding masonry prior to masonry removal. This allows us to remove and replace the steel with little hassle, leaving the surrounding area unharmed. In older buildings, flashings should also be installed, not only to direct water that enters the veneer back to the exterior, but also to protect the steel and slow the rate of corrosion. We can help you catch steel growth at an early stage in order to perform preventative maintenance, which often prevents the need for extensive and costly structural repairs in the future.
