The SC Johnson-owned firehouse in Racine, known as the “Castle” or Racine Fire Department No. 1 House, was built in 1895 and served as an active fire station until 1968. Its Medieval Romanesque Revival style makes it a rare architectural example in the region. In 2009, Masonry Restoration, Inc. Was engaged to rebuild extensive sections of the red sandstone, clean the facade, and reconstruct the brick masonry parapets, preserving the building’s historic character.
Our team began by assessing areas where deterioration was most visible. Our team performed Masonry Rebuilding, Structural Steel Repair, Repointing, Facade Cleaning, Stone and Terra Cotta Restoration to address the deficiencies identified during assessment. These repairs helped ensure consistent exterior performance.
With weakened areas restored, the building envelope now performs more consistently under environmental stress.
