The Mansion Hill Inn occupies the historic McDonnell‑Pierce House, one of Madison’s four surviving sandstone mansions at North Pinckney and East Gilman. Built in 1857–58 for contractor Alexander A. McDonnell in the German Romanesque Revival style by architects August Kutzbock and Samuel Donnell, the 9,000 sq. ft. residence is noted for its finely crafted sandstone exterior, intricate masonry details, and historic character.
Masonry Restoration, Inc. was hired to perform comprehensive stone replacement, precise “Dutchman” repairs, historic repointing, roofing work, and the careful rebuilding of the main entry stairs—ensuring the inn’s architectural integrity is preserved for future generations.
We began by identifying sections showing significant deterioration. Our team performed Historic Preservation, Repointing, and Facade Cleaning to address the deficiencies identified during assessment. The approach supported the long-term reliability of the facade.
These repairs helped extend the building’s service life and enhance the stability of key exterior elements.
